Rocket League Ranks Explained: All Tiers, MMR & How to Climb (2026)

Rocket League has 8 competitive ranks: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Champion, Grand Champion, and Supersonic Legend (SSL). Every rank except SSL is split into three tiers (I, II, III), each with four divisions. Your position in the ladder is determined by a hidden Matchmaking Rating (MMR) that changes after every match you play. Here are all the ranks in Rocket League from lowest to highest:

  1. Bronze — Bronze I, Bronze II, Bronze III
  2. Silver — Silver I, Silver II, Silver III
  3. Gold — Gold I, Gold II, Gold III
  4. Platinum — Platinum I, Platinum II, Platinum III
  5. Diamond — Diamond I, Diamond II, Diamond III

All ranks in Rocket League except SSL have three tiers (I, II, III), and each tier contains four divisions (Division I–IV). Division IV is the top of a tier; clear it and you promote to the next tier’s Division I.

In total, there are 23 distinct rank tiers and 84 divisions (before SSL). Players who haven’t finished their placement matches are listed as Unranked.

MMR (Matchmaking Rating) is the hidden number behind your visible rank badge. Win a match, gain MMR; lose one, drop MMR. Though people often mistake the two, Rocket League uses MMR, not ELO.

How Does Rocket League Ranking Work?

The core logic is simple: win matches, gain MMR; lose matches, drop MMR. How much MMR you win or lose per match is not fixed, however, but rather it depends on the skill gap between teams, your recent win/loss streak, and how confident the system is in your current placement.

To understand how Rocket League divisions work: each tier has four divisions, with Division I at the bottom and Division IV at the top. Climb all the way past Division IV and you rank up; drop out of Division I and you drop down a tier. There’s a small grace buffer at the bottom of a rank, but sustained losses will see you drop to the rank below.

At the start of each season, there is a soft MMR reset. This means that at the start of a new season your MMR is compressed slightly towards the average rather than being wiped entirely. When a new season starts, you must play ten placement matches to establish your visible rank, but your underlying MMR carries over approximately. Ever since Season 22, visible MMR is displayed in-game in the playlist menu once you reach Grand Champion I.

What these numbers mean is that, if you’re sitting in Platinum, you’re exactly where the majority of active players land. Meanwhile, climbing into Diamond already puts you ahead of the average Rocket League player.

Are 2v2 and 1v1 Ranks Separate from 3v3?

Rocket League tracks MMR separately for each competitive playlist. This means that your 3v3 Standard rank, 2v2 Doubles rank, and 1v1 Duel rank are completely separate from one another. Being Diamond in Standard and Gold in Doubles is entirely normal.

Here’s what to expect across the three main playlists:

  • 3v3 Standard: The most populated ranked playlist and the baseline used for most MMR comparisons. Team coordination requirements are highest here, which means individual mistakes are often absorbed by teammates, leading to more stable MMR progression.
  • 2v2 Doubles: Smaller team size means each player’s decisions carry more weight. Rocket League MMR ranks in 2v2 tend to sit slightly higher than the equivalent skill level in 3v3, as there’s less room to hide defensive mistakes. 
  • 1v1 Duel: The most volatile playlist. MMR swings can feel more dramatic here, and the rank distribution skews lower because the skill floor required to hold any given MMR is higher than in team modes.

One important thing to note is that seasonal rewards are based on your highest rank across all playlists. So if you grind 3v3 to Diamond but stay Gold in 2v2, you’ll receive Diamond-level rewards at season end. Extra Modes (Rumble, Hoops, Dropshot, Snow Day) each have their own independent MMR pools as well, typically with lower threshold requirements due to smaller player populations

What Is Supersonic Legend (SSL) — and How Rare Is It?

SSL is the highest rank in Rocket League. Unlike every other rank, it has no tiers and no divisions; cross the MMR threshold (which shifts seasonally) and you’re SSL. The only progression at SSL is your position on the global leaderboard, ranked by raw MMR.

SSL represents approximately 0.05% of the ranked player base, which amounts to a few thousand players worldwide at any given time. Nearly every active RLCS pro player holds SSL or has held it.

How to Climb Your Rocket League Rank — Practical Tips

The biggest thing that affects your Rocket League rank will always be how you play. Here are five tips to help you climb:

  1. Master rotation before mechanics. The gap between Platinum and Diamond isn’t aerial ability — it’s knowing when not to challenge. Learn to read your position as second or third man.
  2. Queue the mode that suits your strengths. Mechanically strong but inconsistent on game sense? 1v1 Duel removes the teammate variable. Prefer team play? 2v2 has faster queue times than 3v3.
  3. Prioritise boost over flashy plays. Arriving at a contest on empty boost costs more games than missed aerials. Build small pad collection into every movement path.
  4. Lock in one or two hitboxes. Octane and Dominus handle differently enough that switching regularly means never fully internalising either one’s ball physics. Pick one and run it for a full season.
  5. Review replays when you’re stuck. Trapped at Division II or III across multiple sessions? Watch your last three losses and focus on positioning, not mechanics. Most rank stagnation is a decision problem.
