KeSPA Returns to the Table: Partnership Resumes with Esports Nations Cup for 2026 Edition

Following the report at the end of April that the Korean e-Sports Association (KeSPA), and by extension South Korea, would be pulling out of the 2026 Esports Nations Cup (ENC), an update statement regarding the situation has now been released. In short, KeSPA and the Esports Foundation (EF) have agreed to a continued partnership “built on a shared vision to support the long-term growth of esports through structured international competition.”

Esports Foundation and KeSPA Partnership to Resume

The big headline is, naturally, with the return of South Korea to the ENC, a large majority of the tournament’s competitive legitimacy has been revived. KeSPA had originally served as the South Korean National Team Partner for the upcoming ENC tournament in November; but had fallen out with the ENC and the Esports Foundation over reported interference on the side of the ENC with regards to the South Korean national team formation.

KeSPA, taking issue with the interference, had announced their decision to pull out of the ENC, citing that the ENC had ‘gone too far’. Now, KeSPA has returned to the fold and supposedly all is once again right with the partnership.

The official notice reads:

‘KeSPA and the Esports Foundation have agreed to a continued partnership and a joint path forward for the Esports Nations Cup 2026, built on a shared vision to support the long-term growth of esports through structured international competition.

With alignment on values, operational standards, and national team structure, and in recognition of KeSPA’s established expertise and authority in Korea, the two parties have agreed that KeSPA will serve as National Team Partner and lead Korea’s national team selection.

Korea’s national coaches and players will continue to be selected with professional integrity, in accordance with the partners’ regulations and competition standards. Ultimately, the players and coaches representing Korea will participate under the official “Team Korea of Esports” banner.

KeSPA’s experience, leadership and contribution to the development of international esports have been instrumental to the worldwide recognition of the esports movement. The shared priority of the Esports Foundation and KeSPA partnership ensures that South Korea’s most talented players have the opportunity to showcase their skills and excellence on the global stage.

The Esports Nations Cup is a new global competition developed in partnership with international stakeholders, game publishers, and ecosystem leaders across more than 100 countries and territories, and we look forward to an impactful participation of Team Korea of Esports at ENC26.’

KeSPA Guards the Gate to South Korean Esports

Following the initial announcement that KeSPA would be pulling out as the National Team Partner representing South Korea for the ENC, the EF stated their intention to "directly communicate with Korean players, coaches, and stakeholders."

This was claimed to be their attempt to ensure the "Korean esports community is represented in a way that reflects its standing in world esports." However, it is well understood how far-reaching KeSPA’s influence is with regards to South Korean esports, across all the country’s participating titles, and EF’s claim, while bold, bought precious little assurance of their success.  

All of this is to say, the return of KeSPA, despite earlier statements from the association as well as the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC), is of marked importance for the ENC’s success. The statement which reads of an understanding between the two entities recognising KeSPA’s ultimate authority with regards to the formation of the national team represents a victory for the Korean association in the end.
