Released in early 2025, Mel is set to receive a midscope rework in League of Legends. Her kit has long been considered problematic, largely due to her ability to reflect enemy projectiles, a mechanic unlike anything previously seen in the game.

Despite multiple nerfs, player frustration has remained a concern for Riot Games, prompting the upcoming rework.

All the Changes Coming to Mel’s Kit Explained

Riot Games have decided to remove the reflection mechanic from Mel’s W, but the ability will still destroy incoming projectiles and protect both Mel and her allies.

The updated version will improve its defensive capabilities without allowing her to turn enemy abilities against their users. This means Mel will no longer be able to reflect powerful attacks (such as Seraphine’s Ultimate, for instance) back at her opponents.

The goal is to reduce frustration for opponents while keeping her W a satisfying and impactful ability for Mel players.

Alongside the changes to her W, Riot is adjusting Mel’s overall kit to reduce her early-game dominance and improve her scaling.

One of the main issues with her current design is how difficult it can be to apply multiple stacks of [P] Searing Brilliance across opponents, often limiting her impact in team fights to a single target.

Her strong early-game durability and damage also allow her to dominate certain lane matchups, while her effectiveness tends to drop as the game progresses.

To address this, Mel will lose some early-game durability and passive damage in exchange for better health and armor scaling.

Her [Q] Radiant Volley will deal less damage in its initial explosion, with more damage spread across subsequent hits, while her [E] Solar Snare will have a shorter root duration against nearby enemies and a longer one against distant targets.

Finally, Riot is making it easier for Mel to build passive stacks and use her Ultimate more frequently. Her Q will receive a cooldown refund when it hits at least one enemy champion, while her Ultimate will gain additional cooldown reduction as it levels up, helping her have a greater impact in team fights.

Mel Rework: Key Changes

These are the key changes to Mel’s kit you need to know ahead of her upcoming midscope rework in League of Legends.

  • [P] Searing Brilliance: Makes it easier for Mel to apply passive stacks across multiple opponents
  • [Q] Radiant Volley: Shifts damage away from the initial explosion and into subsequent hits
  • [W] Rebuttal: Removes the reflection mechanic but retains projectile destruction, improving its defensive capabilities for Mel and her allies
  • [E] Solar Snare: Shortens the root duration against nearby enemies while increasing it against distant targets
  • [R] Golden Eclipse: Refunds part of its cooldown when it hits at least one enemy champion. Gains additional cooldown reduction as it levels up, helping Mel have a greater impact in team fights
  • Reduces her early durability and passive damage in exchange for better health and armor scaling

When Will Mel’s Rework Release?

Mel’s rework is scheduled to arrive in League of Legends Patch 26.22, which is set to release on November 4.

Players will be able to try out Mel’s reworked kit as soon as the patch goes live.

Why Is Mel Being Reworked?

Mel was designed to introduce a new mechanic to League of Legends, but her [W] Rebuttal proved more controversial than abilities like Yasuo’s [W] Wind Wall.

While she performed well for much of the year, elite and professional players eventually found ways to maximize her kit, making her increasingly difficult to balance without frustrating opponents.

After multiple nerfs, Mel remained a challenge many players felt was unfair to play against. As a result, Riot decided to redesign parts of Mel’s kit, with a particular focus on her W and its projectile-reflecting effect.

Initially, Riot considered moving Mel’s reflect mechanic to her Ultimate slot, but this would have created problems for both players and opponents.

Her current Ultimate, [R] Golden Eclipse, is a key part of her combat identity, and reducing it to a basic ability would mean sacrificing much of its power and impact.

Meanwhile, turning her W into an Ultimate would require a significant power boost, potentially making it even more frustrating to play against. This explains the direction Riot opted to aim for regarding Mel's midscope rework in the end.
