The Road to LANXESS: What to Expect from IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 3
The Palladium opens its door to the 16 CS2 teams who are in contention to set foot in the legendary Cathedral of Counter-Strike—the LANXESS Arena. These teams will take on each other starting June 11th in one of the grandest stages CS esports has to offer—the IEM Cologne Major 2026.
The first two stages have already delivered on the promise of action. Starting Stage 3, the heat only intensifies. Better teams, bigger players, LANXESS on the line. Let’s see what the next stage of the tournament has in store for us!
What Changes with Cologne Major 2026 Stage 3?
Traditionally, the Swiss stages of Majors always featured Bo1s for the first two rounds. All this changes with the IEM Cologne Major 2026, as the upcoming Stage 3 will feature Bo3 matches from the get-go.
This change dispels any doubts surrounding the qualifying squads and ensures only the best of the best book their tickets to the LANXESS. Also, the level of competition rises significantly at the later stages, as every team that goes through has proved its mettle against some of the best teams Counter-Strike has to offer. Naturally, the Playoffs will be highly competitive, and when the dust settles, the best team will lift the trophy.
Additionally, all Stage 3 games will feature a live audience, adding to the thrill of the games and making for an exciting few days.
Which Teams Make the LANXESS?
With uncertainty woven into the nature of competition, correctly predicting the 8 teams that will qualify for the IEM Cologne Major 2026 Playoffs would be a feat in itself. So, we have divided the 16 playing teams into five tiers, based on their recent performance and potential, we have divided the 16 playing teams into five tiers.
These tiers not only represent how we think the stage will play out but also Strafe’s power rankings for the rest of the competition. (yes, right to left matters)
The Favorites
There are three teams in this tier: Team Vitality, Team Spirit, and Team Falcons. The French squad’s absolute domination leading up to the Major (Atlanta aside) rightfully earns them the title—Tournament Favorite. Naturally, they are the best team at the Major.
Choosing Team Spirit and Team Falcons above NAVI can raise some eyebrows, but the reason is simple. Both these teams have a higher peak than what the current NAVI squad has displayed.
As we noted at the beginning of the section, this is based on performance and potential. Team Spirit, especially, has shown both performance and potential. The team looks better than it ever did since 2025. Not to mention the team and magixx’s performance during Stage 2, where they were playing without a coach to call timeouts (sorry, Mr. Jab Jabich).
Team Falcons is a bigger question mark, but its karrigan and the 3 legit superstars who have the potential to heavylift the squad. Moreover, Majors have been karrigan’s speciality; his ability to rally his troops is unparalleled, and the same effect on m0NESY and kyousuke will make for a scary Team Falcons.
Strong Teams; Will Qualify
NAVI, FUT, and G2 Esports populate this tier. These teams are the strongest after the top 3, and they have the highest chance out of the remaining teams to qualify. FURIA should be part of this tier, but their performance has posed more questions than trophies in 2026.
Should NAVI be in the higher tier? Arguable. Their performance absolutely warrants it, but would they be able to match the potential of the top 3? We think the answer to that is No. NAVI is a strong team, but they do not have the X-factor, which becomes the difference maker at big tournaments. G2 Esports shares the same problem: extremely solid fundamentals, no clear X-factor.
FUT’s inclusion might draw criticism, but the young squad has undoubtedly earned its place amongst the best teams. They might not win a Major just yet, but their individual talent and fundamentals make them a threat to any team that makes the mistake of underestimating them.
Cutting in Close
These are strong teams whose 2026 performance has left much to be desired. Be it FURIA, MongolZ, or Aurora, compared to their 2025 selves, they have definitely gone down a tier lower.
If the FURIA individuals regain their form, they can make a deep run, but their performance forces us to be conservative about how far they can go. MongolZ and AURORA aren’t much different; they lack consistency, and this means any team that showcases better CS can take their spots.
Lastly, MOUZ, who are coming into the Major with an ad-hoc squad—xertioN, Sphinx, torszi, BrollaN, and xelex. This roster is a preparation for the future and not necessarily one contesting for the Major. Naturally, they aren’t expected to make a deep run, but they still have players who have been tier 1 for over a year now, so they remain a stronger team.
Upset Potential
Legacy's recent win at the CS Asia Championship over Team Falcons is a solid argument for the squad to be placed in a higher tier. The results, however, have followed an unimpressive 2026. Not to mention, their losses to Monte and MIBR don’t instill confidence. They also defeated M80 and TYLOO, two of the weakest Stage 2 teams to qualify, leaving room for doubt, thus resulting in a lower placement than the remaining teams.
9z and BetBoom’s recent rise has been impressive. These squads have already debuted at the Major, and they look as good as we expected them to be and are playing a good brand of CS. But they have a lot to prove and will enter every fixture against the teams above as underdogs. This doesn’t mean they won’t make it, but rather that they face an uphill battle.
PARIVISION should be a tier higher as they are the only squad, except Vitality, Spirit, NAVI, and FUT, to lift a tier 1 trophy. But their performance has continued to degrade, and that cannot be discounted at the Major.
Currently at the Bottom—The Weakest Teams
While Monte and B8 qualified for Stage 3, a lot of times, it came down to individual heroics and performance. Both these squads have continued making mistakes, which will have put them in precarious situations, which will be harder to get out of when they face stronger opponents.
If these teams do not step up their performance, it’d be hard for them to continue their Major journey.

With the best of the best now joining the fiesta, the Cologne Major 2026 will only get better. With 80 players playing, it gets harder to keep track of players one should watch, especially if they are watching the game using the in-game client.
