Karmine Corp defeated Cloud9 3-2 in the opening series of the 2026 League of Legends World Championship on Thursday, October 15. After falling behind 2-1, the European team won two straight games to reach the Play-In upper bracket final.
The five-game series added another chapter to the long-running rivalry between North America and Europe. It was also a dramatic start to Worlds 2026, with Cloud9 dominating the opening game before Karmine Corp battled back to take the series.
How Karmine Corp Came Back Against Cloud9
The Cloud9 vs Karmine Corp series started with a one-sided victory for the North American team. Cloud9 crushed their opponents in 32 minutes, finishing with 20 kills to just one and an 18,600-gold lead. Mid laner Lee "Loki" Sang-min led the way on Locke, racking up 11 kills without a single death.
Karmine Corp bounced back in Game 2, though this time the teams were much more evenly matched. The Europeans took a 16-14 victory after 35 minutes, with Caliste "Caliste" Henry-Hennebert going 6/1/5 on Varus to tie the series at 1-1.
Cloud9 answered with another dominant performance in Game 3. Robert "Blaber" Huang finished 7/0/14 on Jarvan IV as his team secured a 22-5 win, putting Karmine Corp one loss away from dropping into the lower bracket.
Game 4 belonged to Caliste. The ADC delivered an 11/1/3 performance on Xayah, helping Karmine Corp win 15-6 in kills and force a deciding fifth game. After four games of back-and-forth action, the opening series of Worlds 2026 was heading to Silver Scrapes.
Karmine Corp completed the comeback in Game 5 with a convincing 17-8 victory in just over 31 minutes. Yike led the charge on Trundle, finishing 5/1/10, while kyeahoo's Ahri added six kills without dying. Cloud9's Blaber brought out Lillia, reportedly the champion's first appearance in Tier-1 professional play this year, but the pick wasn't enough to turn things around. Karmine Corp finished with nearly 10,000 more gold and closed out the series 3-2.
What's Next for Karmine Corp and Cloud9 at Worlds 2026?
Karmine Corp now move on to the Play-In upper bracket final, where they will face the winner of FURIA vs MVK Esports. A victory would send them to the final qualification match on October 18, with an advantage in side selection and pick order.
Cloud9, meanwhile, drop into the lower bracket semifinal against the loser of FURIA vs MVK Esports. Their situation is considerably more dangerous: another defeat would end their Worlds 2026 campaign.
Only one of the four Play-In teams will make it to the Swiss Stage. The remaining matches run through October 18, with every series played as a best-of-five under Fearless Draft rules.
