Hearthstone Patch 35.4.2 Notes: Full Nerfs, Buffs, and Battlegrounds Overhaul

Hearthstone Patch 35.4.2 is live and comes with the first balance adjustments since the Class Sets launched earlier in the season. Nine Standard cards get changes across six classes, and Battlegrounds receives one of its largest single-patch overhauls in recent memory, covering minions, spells, and the Trinket pool. A Dev Update video discussing all of it is scheduled for tomorrow, May 21, on the Hearthstone YouTube channel.

On the Standard side, the meta has stayed varied with no single dominant archetype pulling too far ahead. Demon Hunter, Druid, and Warrior are currently leading in performance, and each takes one targeted nerf. Mage's Leyline package has struggled to find a footing since the Class Set launched, so three cards receive buffs. Hunter's Animal Companion archetype was identified as missing a strong two-drop, and that gap gets addressed directly with Migrating Elekk.

Standard Nerfs: Demon Hunter, Druid, and Warrior Each Lose One Card

This is a deliberately narrow nerf pass. Blizzard describes the meta as diverse with no major outliers, so the adjustments here target the leading classes without reshaping the format.

Hounds of Fury (Demon Hunter)

Hounds of Fury now summons two 3/2 Demons instead of two 3/3 Demons. The cost and the number of tokens stay the same. The one point of Health reduction makes both tokens easier to trade out of and reduces the total damage output in aggressive lines

Forest's Gift (Druid)

Forest's Gift moves from 2 to 3 mana. A single mana increase changes when and how the card fits into a turn. Druid previously had access to this effect early enough to combine with other low-cost plays, and the new cost cuts into that flexibility.

Darkrider (Warrior)

Darkrider drops from 2/1 to 1/1. The stat reduction makes it die to more things and lose more trades. This weakens its early-game presence without touching its ability or cost.

Mage Leyline Package: Three Buffs to Help the Archetype Compete

The Leyline cards saw some early experimentation after the Mage Class Set arrived but did not settle into the meta. Blizzard is addressing this with a combination of cost reductions and a stat increase on one of the package's key minions.

The Arcanomicon

The Arcanomicon drops from 7 to 6 mana. This is a direct accessibility change. Playing the card no longer commits nearly your entire mana pool on a single turn.

Surge Needle

Surge Needle grows from 3/3 to 3/5. The two extra Health points give it more durability on the board, making it harder to clear with small minions or low-damage spells.

Hunter Animal Companion gets a two-drop: Migrating Elekk

Migrating Elekk changes from 3 mana 3/4 to 2 mana 2/3. The Animal Companion archetype has been popular and has shown reasonable strength, but Blizzard identified a gap at the two-drop slot as the deck's main problem. Moving Migrating Elekk down by one mana fills that slot. The stats drop accordingly (3/4 to 2/3), keeping the power level of the card proportionate to its new curve position.

Dragon Soul, Shattered: Two Essences Get Stronger

Dragon Soul, Shattered is the current event card that rewards players for combining its five Essences. Two of those Essences were not rewarding enough for the effort involved, and both receive buffs here.

Storm Aspect Essence

Storm Aspect Essence now deals 4 damage to all enemy minions, up from 3. The extra point of damage expands the range of minions it can clear outright, making it more reliably useful when you combine the pieces.

Bronze Aspect Essence

Bronze Aspect Essence now refreshes 8 Mana Crystals instead of 7. The one extra Mana Crystal makes the combo turn more likely to produce a decisive follow-up play.

Battlegrounds: A Broader Balance Pass

Battlegrounds gets the largest share of changes in Patch 35.4.2. Blizzard is mainly trying to raise weaker tribes, tone down Demons, and clean up the Trinket pool by removing low-impact options and adjusting several others.

Returning Minions

Three minions return to the pool:

• Holo Rover.
• P-0UL-TR-0N.
• Dreaming Thornweaver.

Demon Changes

Demons receive both tier shifts and stat changes:

• Twisted Wrathguard moves from Tier 5 to Tier 6 and from 4/4 to 8/8.
• Famished Felbat moves from Tier 6 to Tier 5 and from 9/5 to 6/3.
• Stomping Stegodon goes from 3/3 to 4/4, while its Rally bonus drops from +4 Attack to +3 Attack.
• P-0UL-TR-0N returns as a 10/10, but its Avenge threshold increases from 4 to 5 and it no longer grants Divine Shield.

Mech Buffs

Mechs get a strong round of improvements, especially at lower tiers:

• Alert Alarmist: 1/1 to 2/2.
• Metallic Hunter: 2/1 to 4/2.
• Marquee Ticker: 1/5 to 3/7.
• Charging Czarina: 6/2 to 4/1, with its spell trigger rising from +3 Attack to +4 Attack for Divine Shield minions.
• Moonsteel Juggernaut: 6/6 to 8/8, and its Magnetic Satellites improve from 4/4 to 6/6.
• Holo Rover moves from Tier 6 to Tier 4 and changes from 4/12 with Divine Shield to 4/4 without it.

Murloc Buffs

Murlocs also receive several upgrades:

• Bream Counter: 4/4 to 5/5, with its per-Murloc buff improving from +4/+4 to +5/+5.
• Mrglin' Burglar: gains 2 Health, and its per-Murloc buff improves from +5/+4 to +5/+5.
• King Bagurgle moves from Tier 3 to Tier 4, gains stats, and its Battlecry rises from +2/+3 to +4/+4 for other Murlocs.

Pirate Buffs

Pirates are another major focus of the patch:

• Brazen Buccaneer: 4/4 to 6/6, with its end-of-turn buff rising from +2/+2 to +3/+3.
• Sky Admiral Rogers now requires 9 Gold instead of 10 to trigger a Bounty.
• Dastardly Drust gains Health, its standard buff increases, and its Golden version receives a much larger boost.

Other Minion Changes

A few neutral Battlegrounds pieces are also adjusted:

• Nalaa the Redeemer loses 1 Health, but its trigger becomes stronger.
• Drustfallen Butcher drops from 2/9 to 2/7, while its Avenge threshold lowers from 4 to 3.

Spell Changes

Two Bounty spells become more flexible:

• Healthy Bounty now affects four friendly minions instead of three.
• Hostile Bounty now affects four friendly minions instead of three.
• Queen’s Command is nerfed from +2/+3 to +2/+2, including the Naga bonus.

Trinket Pool Changes

Blizzard also trims the Trinket pool to reduce filler options:

• 6 Lesser Trinkets are removed.
• 7 Greater Trinkets are removed.

Some of the most important Trinket changes include:

• Egg of the Endtimes Portrait and Chromatic Tear are slowed down to reduce Dragon consistency.
• Gold Pendant now reaches up to Tier 4 targets.
• Pocket Cyclone, Jewelry Box, and several other Lesser Trinkets get cost reductions.
• Power Trinkets like Powder Keg, Aggem Sticker, and Charming Panpipes receive stat or effect upgrades.

Bug Fixes

Two Battlegrounds text issues are fixed:

• Darkgaze Elder now correctly says “Blood Gems.”
• Butchering now displays the proper stat format

Stay Up to Date with Hearthstone on Strafe

Patch 35.4.2 keeps the Standard meta stable while giving three underperforming archetypes (Mage Leyline, Hunter Animal Companion, and Dragon Soul) room to develop. Battlegrounds takes a wider approach, with most of the work aimed at Pirates and Mechs that were not keeping pace and a Trinket pool that now has fewer filler options. The Dev Update on May 21 will add context to all of it.
