The Esports Foundation has officially announced the postponement of the highly anticipated, inaugural Esports Nations Cup. Originally slated to debut in November 2026 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the event has now been pushed back a full year to November 2027.

This massive international tournament, which plans to host representatives from over 100 countries and territories, has paused its launch to ensure a stable environment for its players, partners, and fans.

Clarifying the Geopolitics

The primary driver behind this significant delay is the ongoing geopolitical turmoil in the Middle East, which is directly tied to the 2026 Iran War. In its official statements, the Esports Foundation cited an "ongoing assessment of the wider regional situation" as the absolute catalyst for the schedule change.

Interestingly, the strategic response for the ENC differs substantially from how the EF handled the Esports World Cup. While the geopolitical climate forced the EWC to relocate its 2026 event from Riyadh to Paris, the EF was determined to preserve Riyadh as the inaugural host city for the ENC.

By choosing to postpone the ENC to 2027 rather than relocating it, the EF aims to provide the necessary certainty and stability that national teams, game publishers, and stakeholders require.

Unchanged Financial Commitments and Ecosystem Support

Despite the 12-month delay, the financial and structural pledges established by the Esports Foundation remain completely intact. EF CEO Ralf Reichert emphasized that the organization’s dedication to the tournament and the national esports ecosystems being built around it has not wavered.

All existing promises regarding the ENC Development Fund will remain securely in place. Out of the massive $45 million committed to the ENC ecosystem, $20 million is allocated to this Development Fund, which will continue to actively support National Team Partners with travel, logistics, training camps, and promotional efforts as they adjust to the revised 2027 timeline.

Looking Ahead to Riyadh 2027

Despite the postponement, the nation-based Esports Nations Cup preserves its ambitious 16-game lineup, including Counter-Strike 2, League of Legends, and Chess.

With qualifiers mostly completed, locking in Riyadh for November 2027 gives global national teams a valuable, extended runway to build local ecosystems, finalize rosters, and prepare under optimal conditions.
