Esports World Cup 2026 Meta Recap: Scorching Hot
The Esports World Cup 2026 is finally over and, after PVISION's victory, it's time to step back a little and look at the bigger picture to see which heroes defined the metagame during the tournament.
At the same time, we will also check the heroes that were not as popular as the Top 5 but still made a big difference in terms of efficiency and should compose the so-called shadow meta that might show up at The International 2026.
Esports World Cup 2026 Meta Recap
Scorching Hot Embers
Our Top 5 most popular heroes begins with Bane in fifth place and the second-highest win rate on the list (again). He won 24 out of the 43 games he appeared in and achieved a respectable 55.81% win rate.
Ember Spirit was one of the most popular midlaners, showing up in 45 matches and winning 29 of them to claim the best win rate in the Top 5 with an impressive 64.44%.

Third place seems to be the reserved spot for the lowest performers in the latest meta changes, and this time around Clockwerk was the hero to fill that spot after 59 appearances.
He won 26 matches, lost 33, and ended with the only win rate below 50% among the Top 5, finishing the Esports World Cup 2026 with a 44.07% win rate.
Hoodwink Back at the Top. Act Surprised.
Second place was taken by Earth Spirit after winning 33 out of 64 games, amounting to a 51.56% win rate. Despite his original support role, lately it has become much more common to see him played as a bulky midlaner.

Finally, Hoodwink returns as the supreme safe pick and the most popular hero at the Esports World Cup 2026. She won 35 out of 65 games and finished the event with a solid 53.85% win rate.
Shadow Meta: More Fire!
As usual, we will check the Shadow Meta using a 10% participation threshold, which means we will look at heroes that were present in at least 15 games and delivered strong performances.
Over 70% Win Rate
Lina and Slardar were the standout performers this time around, finishing with 77.78% and 72.22% win rates, respectively. Both heroes were picked in 18 of the 152 games played at the Esports World Cup 2026.

If you paid attention to our previous meta recap for BLAST Slam VII, you might have noticed that Ember Spirit was part of the Shadow Meta before transitioning into one of the most popular heroes at the EWC.
Over 60% Win Rate
The 60%+ win rate bracket has a lot of variety and even some surprising appearances, including Ember Spirit, who was the third most popular pick while also maintaining an excellent 64.44% win rate. Take a look at the full list of heroes with a win rate above 60%:
| Hero | Win Rate | # of Matches |
|---|---|---|
| Kez | 66.67% | 18 |
| Lycan | 66.67% | 15 |
| Nature's Prophet | 66.67% | 15 |
| Dark Seer | 65.52% | 29 |
| Ember Spirit | 64.44% | 45 |
| Winter Wyvern | 64.29% | 28 |
| Undying | 63.89% | 36 |
| Lone Druid | 63.16% | 19 |
| Shadow Fiend | 61.54% | 39 |
| Clinkz | 61.11% | 18 |
| Invoker | 60.87% | 23 |
It's important to note that the top performers were cores, mostly offlaners. Dark Seer had an impressive 65.52% win rate and stands out for taking part in 29 matches, the fourth-highest participation on the list.
Shadow Fiend did not perform quite as well but played significantly more games, making 39 appearances as the third most contested hero at EWC 2026 while still managing to achieve a respectable 61.54% win rate.
Closing Thoughts
The Esports World Cup 2026 was a great tournament and the last frontier of Tier 1 Dota 2 before The International 2026. After winning the tournament, PVISION heads into TI as the favorite, but recent history suggests that teams that win the EWC tend not to win The International.
This update serves multiple purposes because, on top of helping you adjust your expectations for The International 2026, it also works as a list of the best heroes to pick while grinding Quartero's Curios and the Dark Carnival.
