Third Time's the Charm? Blizzard's New StarCraft Shooter Coming This Year

Blizzard is taking another swing at a StarCraft shooter, and this time it looks like we might actually see it. Reports suggest the game will headline BlizzCon 2026 this September, marking the company's third attempt to bring the beloved RTS franchise into the action genre.

Details Are Starting to Leak

Jez Corden from Windows Central broke the news, confirming through his own sources that a StarCraft third-person shooter is in development and likely to be revealed at BlizzCon 2026 on September 12-13. The project is being led by Dan Hay, the former Far Cry executive producer who joined Blizzard back in 2022.

If that name sounds familiar, it should. Hay oversaw Far Cry during some of its most successful years at Ubisoft before making the jump to Blizzard.

The game itself is reportedly an open-world shooter, though specific details about gameplay and whether it will focus on multiplayer remain under wraps. What we do know is that this project survived Blizzard's brutal layoffs earlier in 2024, when most developers working on the company's canceled survival game were let go.

Two Canceled Games Already

Here's where things get interesting. This isn't Blizzard's first rodeo with StarCraft shooters, it's their third. StarCraft: Ghost, a stealth-action game that actually looked promising and even had gameplay trailers, was canceled back in 2014 after years in development hell. Then came Project Ares, which was reportedly shaping up nicely as a Battlefield-style shooter set in the StarCraft universe before getting axed in 2019 so Blizzard could focus on Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2.

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, who first mentioned this new project in his book "Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment," put it perfectly when he said Blizzard just can't quit StarCraft shooters. And honestly? Fans are hoping the third time really is the charm.

The Franchise Needs This

The timing feels right for a StarCraft comeback. The franchise has been relatively quiet on the game development front, though StarCraft II continues to receive updates and recently returned to China after a three-year absence. There have also been reports of South Korean companies competing for the StarCraft IP to develop new titles.

If Blizzard can pull this off, we might finally see the StarCraft universe expand beyond its RTS roots in a meaningful way. With Dan Hay's track record on Far Cry and the lessons learned from two previous canceled attempts, this project has the potential to give fans something special. We will just have to wait until September to see if Blizzard can finally deliver on this long-awaited vision.
