Craig "Blackbeard" Jenson is an Attacking Operator in Rainbow Six Siege. He was introduced in the Operation Dust Line expansion alongside Valkyrie. Later, he was fully remastered in Operation Collision Point.

Biography

Blackbeard was raised in an upper middle-class American family with no military background. His family followed careers in medical sciences, but he chose a different path. At a young age, he decided to become a Navy SEAL.

His father, a kinesiology professor, helped guide his early ambitions. Blackbeard joined the Boy Scouts of America and later became part of the Naval Sea Cadet Corps’ Blue Angels Squadron. These early experiences solidified his decision to serve his country.

At 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. This allowed him to pursue education and gain experience. Over time, he achieved his goal of becoming a Navy SEAL.

Training and Missions

Blackbeard completed several advanced military training courses, including Diving Supervisor certification, Advanced Close Quarter Combat, and the Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) School. He participated in real-world operations such as deployment in Afghanistan, Operation Ocean Shield, Operation Jubilee, the seizure of the MV Morning Glory, and the Maersk Alabama hijacking.

He also worked as a SEAL instructor, during which he met Meghan Castellano. Eventually, Blackbeard married, had children, and was recruited into Rainbow in 2016.

Psychological Profile

Blackbeard is goal-driven and values both mental and physical strength. Outside of work, he is a mountain climber and competitive sailor. He has even sailed around the world and is described as rugged and easygoing with a commanding presence and a sense of humor.

He enjoys nature and often compares survival in the wild to adapting in life. When he was five, he camped alone in the woods behind his house for two days before returning home. He later discovered his parents were watching him the whole time. This story reflects a lifelong desire for adventure.

His great-grandfather left his job and family to become a gold miner in the north. Blackbeard sees himself as having inherited that explorer’s mindset, though he emphasizes his commitment to his own family. At home, he enjoys playing pirates with his kids and appreciates the teamwork element in pirate lore, comparing it to how Rainbow functions during missions.

Gameplay Overview

Blackbeard is a Heavy-Armored Attacker. His standout feature is the H.U.L.L. Adaptable Shield, which attaches to his primary weapon. He offers more cover during engagements but moves slower than most operators.

Loadout

His primary weapons include the Mk17 CQB assault rifle and the SR-25 marksman rifle. For gadgets, players can choose between frag grenades and a claymore. His unique ability is the H.U.L.L. Adaptable Shield.

H.U.L.L. Adaptable Shield Explained

This shield is a variant of the ballistic shield and includes a retractable, bulletproof glass at head level. It is made of a three-layer plate design and folds to a smaller size for rappelling. The shield also features a pneumatic charge that allows Blackbeard to break through soft surfaces or knock enemies off their feet.

Key Mechanics

The shield can breach non-reinforced walls, Castle’s Armor Panels, Azami’s Kiba Barriers, and deployable shields. It automatically uses a charge to break through Castle’s barriers but cannot be used to enter through those windows. The charge also knocks down enemies it contacts, including defenders using shields such as Clash. If timed right, it can even cancel out Oryx’s Remah Dash, leaving both operators standing.

Blackbeard becomes concussed for a few seconds after breaching a wall, which temporarily prevents him from aiming down sights. This concussion effect does not apply when breaching other objects like deployable shields. While escorting the hostage, he cannot use his shield’s breaching ability or equip it while rappelling.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Adds head-level protection while shooting.
  • Useful for peeking windows and doorways.
  • Can breach barriers and stagger enemies.
  • Offers defensive options during rappelling.

Weaknesses

  • Vulnerable to common shield counters.
  • Slow aim-down-sight speed.
  • Limited mobility.
  • Must manually reload while exposed.
  • Shield does not cover the full body when stored on his back.

Shield Use on Rappel

When rappelling, the shield reduces in size but can still be equipped. He retains standard ballistic shield functions such as Free Look and the ability to break through soft barriers. This makes him useful for surprise entries and unconventional angles. The folded shield on his back does not protect him fully like other ballistic shields do when holstered.

Tactical Use Cases

Blackbeard excels at holding long lines of sight with his SR-25 and can be effective in close quarters using the Mk17 CQB. He can safely gather intel through windows or make slow, careful pushes with frontal protection. He is most effective in situations where defensive utility is cleared, and he has space to leverage his shield without being flanked.

Counters

the-full-story-of-blackbeard-in-rainbow-six-siege

Blackbeard is countered by most methods that defeat ballistic shields. He can be slowed, flanked, or overwhelmed by explosives. He cannot breach while escorting hostages and is vulnerable to fire or melee when his shield is retracted. Enemies with burst damage or fast mobility can take advantage of his limited movement and slower reaction speed.

Notable Interactions

His breaching ability can counter certain defensive setups like Castle’s panels or Azami’s barriers. He can knock down defenders like Clash using the pneumatic charge. Against Oryx, a well-timed breach can stop the Remah Dash. However, breaching causes a short concussion that can be a liability if not managed carefully.

Device Description: TARS Mk 0

The TARS Mk 0 (Transparent Armored Rifle-Shield) is designed to give rifle-level protection without blocking vision. It attaches to Blackbeard’s primary weapon and includes a retractable bulletproof glass panel. The shield can be swapped when damaged and retracts automatically when aiming down sights or reloading. While it protects the head and upper body, it leaves other areas exposed.

Internal Evaluation

Blackbeard personally tested the updated shield with operators Pulse and Blitz. Although not deeply involved in the technical side, he values reliability and performance. During internal evaluations, the shield performed effectively during simulated engagements. Feedback was positive, though Mira warned the operators to be cautious with the tech team during their playful experiments.

Trivia

Blackbeard first appeared in the Laws of Siege trailer, where he was seen using an R4-C with a Level III Striker Shield. His name was announced with the release of Operation Dust Line. Blackbeard's gear includes Crye Precision equipment such as the Air-Frame helmet, AC combat set in Multicam, and Jumpable Plate Carrier.

His knee guard features medical notations like “BPOS” for blood type and “NKA” meaning no known allergies. He is the only operator trusted by Chul Kyung Hwa of the 707th SMB. Though once listed with the Viperstrike squad, he is now officially affiliated with the Redhammer squad. His shield design resembles a device used by a character in the 1987 James Bond film The Living Daylights. He was also part of the Afghanistan operations along with Maverick, Frost, Alibi, and Warden.

Final Notes

Blackbeard in Rainbow Six Siege is a calculated attacker. His adaptable rifle shield allows him to take on frontal engagements that would be too risky for other operators. He trades speed for survivability and suits players who prefer measured pushes and tactical play. His story, training, and unique ability make him a solid and well-rounded operator in the game.
