In a shocking turn of events, reigning Masters Champions T1 will not have the opportunity to defend their title after suffering a devastating 2-1 defeat at the hands of Paper Rex at the VCT Pacific Stage 1 Playoffs on May 3, 2025. Despite dominating the opening map Fracture with a convincing 13-3 scoreline, T1 collapsed in the subsequent maps, losing 4-13 on Ascent and a crushing 2-13 on Lotus. Paper Rex's remarkable comeback was highlighted by stellar performances from Jinggg and something, who dominated the decisive third map.

The elimination marks the second consecutive year where the winners of the first Masters event of the season fails to qualify for the second international tournament. In 2024, Sentinels won Masters Madrid but couldn't advance past the VCT Americas 2024 Stage 1 group phase, establishing this concerning pattern for championship defenders.

Match Breakdown: A Tale of Dominance

The series between these Pacific titans was characterized by one-sided affairs on all three maps. T1 started strong on Fracture, demolishing Paper Rex with a commanding 13-3 victory.

BuZz led the charge for the Korean squad with a stellar 19-kill performance on Neon, while Meteor contributed significantly with 18 frags.

However, Paper Rex responded with equal force on Ascent, evening the series with a dominant 13-4 win. The team from Southeast Asia then completed their comeback on Lotus with an even more impressive 13-2 scoreline, effectively crushing T1's hopes of going to Toronto.

Continuing a Troubling Pattern

This elimination continues an unusual trend in VALORANT esports. In 2024, Sentinels won Masters Madrid, yet failed to qualify for the next international event after being eliminated in the VCT Americas 2024 Stage 1 group phase.

Now history repeats itself with T1 suffering a similar fate.

Historical Dominance

While this result might surprise casual fans, the head-to-head history between these teams tells a different story. Paper Rex has historically dominated this matchup, now holding a commanding 7-1 record (88% win rate) against T1.

Even more telling, Paper Rex has won 15 maps compared to T1's mere 3 in their overall history. The victory also extends Paper Rex's current win streak against T1 to 3 consecutive matches.

Despite T1's status as Masters Champions, Paper Rex has consistently had their number in direct confrontations.

Key Performers

The final map showcased Paper Rex's firepower, with Jinggg posting an impressive 332 ACS on Raze, while something's Yoru contributed with 299 ACS.

Meanwhile, T1's usually reliable stars struggled to make an impact, with BuZz managing only 125 ACS on Yoru during the decisive map. The elimination is particularly disappointing for T1 given their dominance on the first map, where they looked poised to continue their championship form. Instead, Paper Rex's resilience and adaptability proved too much to overcome.

With T1's elimination, the Masters Toronto field opens up for a new champion to rise as the VALORANT Champions Tour 2025 continues to deliver unexpected results and thrilling competition.
