Riot Games has officially unveiled the qualification structure and financial support programs for the VALORANT Champions Tour 2027 season, marking a significant step toward a more performance-driven and accessible competitive ecosystem.

The announcement introduces expanded regional competitions, guaranteed payouts for non-partner teams, and a continuous promotion-relegation system that ensures every single match carries weight.

12-Team Kickoffs Return With Open Qualifier Slots

The triple-elimination Kickoff format is back for VCT 2027, and it's getting a meaningful upgrade in accessibility. Kickoff tournaments across VCT Americas, EMEA, and Pacific will each feature 12 teams: eight partner teams (reduced from 12) and four teams from Open Qualifiers, with the top three finishers from each Kickoff earning a direct berth to Masters.

Critically, partner teams are no longer guaranteed a free pass beyond Kickoff. Teams that fail to perform at Cups or Masters will be pushed into Open Playoffs and must earn their way back into top-tier competition, with poor-performing or new teams required to restart through Open Qualifiers entirely. South Asia and Oceania-based teams will access this pathway through the Pacific Wild Card route.

14 Regional Competitions Power the Global Pipeline

VCT 2027 will be fed by 14 regional competitions that serve as the foundation for Cup qualification. The full list of regions includes:

This is a substantial expansion of the competitive map, with Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam elevated to dedicated regional competitions within the VCT Pacific umbrella—reflecting VALORANT's rapid growth across Southeast Asia.

VCT China Keeps Its Visitor Team Model

VCT China will continue operating its distinctive visitor team system in 2027. Chinese Kickoffs will feature eight partner teams, two visitor teams, and two Open Qualifier teams. Visitor teams and partner teams both receive direct entry into Kickoff and the first two Cups, preserving the unique promotion-and-relegation dynamics that define the Chinese competitive ecosystem.

Roster Continuity Rules for Open and Creator-Led Teams

One of the most team-friendly rules in the new structure is the roster continuity provision for Open and creator-led organizations. Teams can retain their accumulated points and qualification status across the season by maintaining at least three of their five starting players. The rule is designed to give emerging organizations the stability to build a competitive identity over time, rather than starting from scratch after every roster shuffle.

Financial Payouts for Non-Partner Team: A First for VCT

Perhaps the most groundbreaking element of VCT 2027 is Riot's commitment to guaranteed fixed payouts for non-partner teams—a first in the circuit's history. The qualification payment structure is as follows:

Milestone

Fixed Payout

Qualify for Kickoff or a Cup

$100,000 USD

Qualify for Masters

$200,000 USD

Qualify for Champions

$400,000 USD

These payments come on top of tournament prize pools, travel support for major events, and other ecosystem incentives. Non-partner teams qualifying for the Game Changers Championship will also receive an additional $100,000 USD incentive payment.

What Riot Is Building Toward

Leo Faria, Global Head of VALORANT Esports at Riot Games, summed up the philosophy behind the new structure:

"VCT 2027 is built around a simple belief: the best teams should earn their place every step of the way and every match matters."

The new qualification structure builds on Riot's previously announced vision of a fully tournament-driven VCT from 2027 onward. Further details on slot allocation, regional qualification formats, and partner team selection are expected to be shared ahead of VALORANT Champions later this year.
