The esports community is very excited for KCX 4, Karmine Corp premier event on November 9, 2024, at Paris' La Défense Arena. But behind this public success story lies a dark saga of conflicts between the club’s founders, Kamel Kebir (Kameto) and Amine Mekri (Prime). Their once-thriving partnership has devolved into a struggle for control, marked by legal threats and hidden motives.

This article is based on the original investigative work published in Revue21, written by Clément Fayol and Nicolas Gastineau, which delves deeply into the topic. Their investigation has been instrumental in uncovering many of the issues discussed here.

An Esports dream realized, but at a high cost

Founded in 2020, Karmine Corp rapidly grew to become France's most beloved esports team. Kameto and Prime, internet celebrities in their own right, transformed the team into a cultural phenomenon. Kameto’s journey began with humble roots; he built a massive following on Twitch, where he shared not only his gameplay but his life, emotions, and ambitions. By 2022, his success extended beyond streaming, with his personal business generating over a million euros annually. Kameto’s goal was clear: he wanted to create an esports powerhouse, a club capable of competing globally in League of Legends.

Prime’s story is equally compelling but different in scope. Known for his bold YouTube videos and entrepreneurial ventures, Prime established himself as a brand, eventually collaborating with Kameto to expand Karmine Corp’s reach. The partnership combined Kameto’s esports expertise with Prime’s storytelling, and together they built a fanbase as passionate as any traditional sports club. Their KCX events became cultural milestones, drawing tens of thousands of attendees. Yet, the ambitions and responsibilities they shared would eventually drive a wedge between them.

Growing tensions and diverging visions within Karmine Corp

In 2021, Karmine Corp hit new heights with sold-out events, record-breaking viewership, and a growing fan group called "The Blue Wall". This surge of popularity extended to lucrative sponsorships and merchandise sales, cementing the club’s financial strength. However, behind the scenes, tensions began to simmer. Kameto, as the face of Karmine on Twitch, seemed closely tied to the club's identity. Prime, in contrast, began to use the club’s resources to sustain his personal brand ventures. According to insiders, Prime relied on the club’s funds for personal expenses and business projects unrelated to Karmine Corp’s mission.

Prime also initiated deals under Karmine's name, allegedly without Kameto’s knowledge or consent. One such deal involved a music label, Play Two, for which Prime reportedly secured a contract by presenting himself as Karmine Corp's strategic head. This arrangement secured a €240,000 advance, a lifeline for his struggling personal business but a major breach of trust within Karmine Corp.

Legal showdowns and the risk of a public fallout

In summer 2022, Kameto's team discovered financial discrepancies tied to Prime's activities, which included using Karmine Corp’s finances for unrelated projects. These discoveries culminated in a formal notice of revocation from Kameto’s lawyers, demanding accountability from Prime over merchandise and event revenue.

Kameto warned that the fallout could extend to their relationship with Riot Games, the publisher of League of Legends and VALORANT, which prohibits unauthorized revenue from its intellectual property.

Prime, however, disputed the allegations, claiming to have informed Riot Games through official channels. His team denied any mismanagement or fraudulent activity. Yet the distrust was deep-rooted, and both sides were poised for a legal battle that would risk the stability of Karmine Corp.

The impact on Karmine Corp future

The stakes of this conflict go beyond Kameto and Prime. As esports grows into a mainstream entertainment industry, clubs like Karmine Corp sit at the center of a rapidly evolving ecosystem. Mismanagement and internal conflicts threaten not only their reputation but their partnerships, sponsorships, and loyal fanbase. In France, Karmine Corp has become a symbol of esports culture, and this internal strife could undermine its standing if unresolved.

The story of Kameto and Prime is emblematic of a new era where internet personalities transition into high-stakes entrepreneurship. Karmine Corp’s journey reflects the challenges faced by the esports industry as it navigates uncharted territory, balancing the allure of fame with the realities of business. How this story unfolds will likely set a precedent for future esports ventures and remind fans that the glamor of success often hides complex struggles behind the scenes.
