On January 25, 2024, Into the Breach (ITB) released a public statement announcing their closure, marking the beginning of a huge scandal in the esports industry.

Initial Public Statement

The Announcement

Into the Breach released an official statement revealing that significant mismanagement had been discovered within the organization. The investigation uncovered that an individual who had been entrusted with all financial and monetary decisions had been embezzling funds for personal use.

Impact on Operations

The organization stated that this betrayal left ITB in an unsustainable position, forcing them to begin the process of winding down their operations. They emphasized their commitment to handling the situation transparently and responsibly with legal and financial advisors.

Commitment to Stakeholders

ITB outlined their priority to support players, staff, and partners during the transition period. The statement acknowledged that the organization was built on the passion of underdogs and the belief that hard work could overcome any odds.

Smooya calls out the thief

Shortly after the public statement, professional Counter-Strike player Owen "smooya" Butterfield made a public post on X , directly identifying ITB's CEO as the person responsible for the misappropriation of funds.

CEO's Response

Following smooya's accusation, ITB's CEO (known as "SlayTheMinotaur" on X) published a comprehensive response admitting to the allegations.

Personal Struggles

The CEO detailed their personal financial difficulties and acknowledged using company funds for personal expenses and gambling. The statement included explanations about failed attempts to secure additional funding and partnerships to save the organization.

Financial Mismanagement

The response outlined how the misuse of funds eventually led to the organization's unsustainable position. The CEO took full responsibility for the organization's failure and the breach of trust placed in them by the community, players, and staff.

Organizational Impact

The scandal resulted in:

  • Complete cessation of ITB's operations
  • Displacement of contracted players and staff
  • Engagement of legal and financial advisors
  • Implementation of a transition plan for all affected parties

The organization expressed hope to find a way to honor the legacy built with their community, despite the circumstances of their closure.
