What is Overwatch 2?

Overwatch 2 is the sequel to Overwatch and is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Released in 2023, players choose one of more than 40 characters, called ‘heroes,’ each with their own unique abilities and playstyles.

The game is divided into 2 teams of 6 players each, with each player choosing a hero to play as. The teams then compete in a variety of different game modes on various maps set in different parts of the world. In Overwatch 2, the primary objective is to score more points than the other team. The method of achieving this differs based on the game mode.

Standard play includes:

  • Control
  • Escort
  • Flashpoint
  • Hybrid
  • Push
  • Clash

Broad and Diverse Gameplay

With over 20 maps to play out these game modes, served on a random rotation, players will constantly be tested and challenged with a variety of gameplay. Moreover, by performing well in matches, players can earn in-game currency, which can be used to unlock new hero skins and other cosmetic items. There’s a further option of spending real money to purchase Gold Coins, however, it may not be for everyone.

Much like other ‘hero shooters’, each character or hero has their own unique set of abilities and playstyles. This offers a breadth of options for budding gamers looking to get into the genre, allowing them to explore and experiment to find their ideal gaming experience.

Enthralling Lore

Overwatch also has a rich lore and universe. The game is set in a future where humanity has developed advanced technology and robots, and the world is on the brink of war. Overwatch, an international task force initiative, formed to restore peace to the world, is the central focus of the story. Comprised of the world’s heroes and greatest champions, Overwatch was forced into inactivity along with its members shortly before the game takes place. Overwatch 2 picks up where we left off, with the members slowly finding one another years later in the hopes of once again joining forces in the face of a new emerging world crisis.

Thriving Esports Scene

While it may not have the massive stadiums and leagues of yesteryear, the Overwatch competitive scene is still very much alive and kicking. With many skilled players continuing to compete in the circuits, Overwatch 2 has taken what Overwatch began, and built it into an esports legacy worthy of the fans.

Overwatch 2: The Fall From Grace

These days, the Overwatch franchise is a shadow of its former glory. All games rise and fall with the times, even the best of them. Throughout its tumultous history, Overwatch has seen some of the greatest highs and some of the lowest lows. However, despite its evolution and controversies, Overwatch 2 remains a staple in competitive gaming, with a devoted fanbase that keeps the spirit of hero shooters alive.
