Fnatic Bench Head Coach Milan After Disappointing Stage 1

Change is coming to Fnatic's coaching staff. Following a review after VCT EMEA Stage 1, the organization announced that head coach Milan "Milan" de Meij is stepping aside from his role, with Casper "Desmo" Rasmussen sliding in as interim head coach ahead of the upcoming EWC qualifiers.

A Tough Call After a Tough Stage

Fnatic made the announcement on their official X account, stating they would be restructuring their coaching staff after reviewing the team's performance in Stage 1. The timing says it all: the team had high expectations going into the tournament, and results clearly did not match them.

Fnatic's run ended with a loss to Team Heretics in the Lower Bracket Semifinals, a result that stings for a team that reached three international Grand Finals in 2025 alone. This year so far, Fnatic has missed out on attending every international VCT event after their latest loss.

The org made clear this is not a clean break just yet. "Whilst we are still in discussion with Milan about his future at FNATIC we want to thank him for his incredible efforts in the position," the statement read. So while the door is not completely shut, Milan steps back from the head coaching seat for now.

Milan's Run: From Assistant to Decorated Head Coach

Milan joined Fnatic in September 2024 as assistant coach, coming over from GIANTX. He was elevated to head coach in February 2025 ahead of EMEA Stage 1, and what followed was a remarkable stretch of results.

Under his guidance, Fnatic reached the Grand Finals of Masters Toronto, the Esports World Cup, and VALORANT Champions in 2025, a level of consistency that earned him the 2025 VCT Coach of the Year award. That kind of track record makes this decision all the more surprising for the Fnatic faithful.

Desmo Steps Up

Stepping into the interim head coach role is Casper "Desmo" Rasmussen, a Danish coach who joined Fnatic's staff for the 2026 season. Desmo is no stranger to high-pressure situations and has previous tier-one coaching experience across multiple regions.

Fnatic also noted they are working on finalizing a permanent head coach to work alongside him going forward, which signals the team's intent to keep things stable heading into the EWC qualifying window.

Next Steps

The EWC qualifiers represent the next critical test for Fnatic's lineup. With an interim coaching setup, the team will need to find its footing quickly.

Whether Milan's story with Fnatic is truly over or takes a new shape remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the organization is not willing to stand still when results demand a response.
