ESL Locks in IEM Krakow 2027, Announces Major Updates for Next Season

ESL has announced a series of updates to its 2027 CS2 calendar. This includes the renewal of IEM Krakow for next year, an expanded prize pool for the 2027 season, a format and structure update for the ESL Pro League, and several other changes.

As one of Counter-Strike's leading tournament organizers, ESL holds a strong position in the game's esports ecosystem. With these updates, the organizer aims to deepen its involvement in CS2 esports while creating more opportunities for teams to shine on the big stage. Below is a rundown of everything ESL announced today regarding its 2027 calendar.

IEM Krakow 2027

Tournament dates: January 27 - February 7, 2027
Location: Kraków, Poland
Stage 1 Teams: VRS Invites will go out to teams ranked 9th-20th. The remaining four teams will be Wildcard Invites.
Stage 2 Teams: VRS Invites will go out to teams ranked 1st-8th.
Total Winnings: The tournament will feature a $1,250,000 prize pool, split as Club Reward ($250,000) and Prize Money ($1,000,000).

VRS invites will be based on the first available monthly VRS publication of January 2027. Additionally, all stages of the tournament will be played on LAN.

Bigger Prize Pool

ESL will increase its financial commitment to players and teams by allocating $11,450,000 in incentives and rewards for the 2027 season. This will include:

Total Winnings: Split between Prize Money (distributed among participants) and Club Rewards (awarded to organizations).
Annual Club Incentives: A program that annually rewards the top 16 ranked teams based on tournament participation and viewership impact.
ESL Grand Slam: The first team to win three ESL Pro Tour Masters tournaments and one EPT Championship tournament within a span of 10 events will receive $1,000,000. Unlike previous editions, the Grand Slam could occur twice in 2027. If that happens, ESL's total commitment could rise to $12,450,000.

ESL Pro League Changes

ESL announced last year that Pro League Season 24 (October 2026) would reduce the total number of teams from 24 to 16 and transition to a fully LAN event, eliminating the online stage. Initially, this change was applied only to Season 24, but ESL has now confirmed that the new format will be carried over to both Pro League seasons in 2027 as well.

This shift reduces the overall space Pro League seasons occupy on the calendar, freeing up room for additional tournaments or more downtime between events. Below is the updated schedule for ESL Pro League Seasons 25 and 26:

Four of the seven events have yet to be revealed. While ESL hasn't announced when IEM Cologne 2027 will take place, it's expected to be Event #5, as the tournament is typically held in July or August.

The gap in June has been left to accommodate the Buenos Aires Major (May 31–June 20), while July is reserved for the 2027 Esports World Cup (July 16–August 1). Similarly, the Shanghai Major will occupy the November–December slot, with the tournament scheduled to run from November 22 to December 12, 2027.

More Updates on ESL Pro Tour 2027

Starting in 2027, all ESL event playoffs will expand to eight teams, up from the current six. To accommodate this change, IEM Krakow's Group Stage will no longer feature Upper and Lower Finals, as these matches were previously used to determine seeding and limit the playoff field to six teams.

The first stage of IEM Krakow and IEM Cologne will now feature four Wildcard invites. To be eligible, rosters must be ranked lower than 12th on the Global VRS list and include at least three players who were individually members of a top 12 roster on the VRS invite list at any point within the last six months. These invites are intended for teams with newly formed lineups or those whose rankings were reset due to roster reconstruction.

Additionally, ESL Pro Tour events will head to a minimum of three new cities, spanning three continents, in 2027.
