Valve appears to be phasing out Counter-Strike’s battle royale mode, “Danger Zone”, according to recent findings. Well-known data miner Gabe Follower revealed in a tweet that Valve is removing Danger Zone-related assets from Counter-Strike 2’s game files, suggesting the mode may not make the transition to CS2 after all.

History of Danger Zone

Launched on December 6, 2018, for CS:GO, Danger Zone was Valve’s debut into the battle royale genre, featuring fast-paced matches with up to 18 players. Unlike traditional battle royales, it kept CS:GO’s signature gunplay and economy mechanics, integrating a tablet-based system that allowed players to purchase gear and track enemies. The mode debuted with the “Blacksite” map and later expanded with “Sirocco,” each offering distinct tactical gameplay.

Despite its unique blend of mechanics, Danger Zone never captured a broad player base. Long matchmaking queues and infrequent updates led to dwindling player engagement. While Valve did introduce new features in an attempt to revive the mode, it struggled to compete with more popular battle royale games.

By no means was Danger Zone a fan-favorite, but a select few expected the mode to be ported. But if Gabe Follower’s recent tweet is anything to go by, Valve is removing the danger zone associated assets from the game, which likely marks the end of the mode’s support.

What's next?

The news comes as a surprise to many who had hoped Danger Zone would eventually return in Counter-Strike 2. Previous game file discoveries had hinted at the possibility of its revival, but this latest update suggests Valve has changed course.

The removal of Danger Zone-related assets from the game indicates that Valve is prioritizing the core competitive aspects of Counter-Strike 2, rather than investing in a battle royale mode that failed to achieve the same level of popularity as the franchise’s primary game modes.
