BLAST Slam VIII Will Bring Changes to the Series
BLAST Slam has established itself as one of the biggest tournaments in the Dota 2 professional circuit, and the eighth edition of the series will introduce several changes, including an expanded lineup and a new Group Stage format.
Let's take a look at the changes announced for BLAST Slam VIII and how they could affect the experience for both fans and teams.

Group Stage: 16 Teams, No More BO1s
The first major change is that BLAST Slam VIII will feature 16 teams instead of the 12 we've become accustomed to seeing. This means even more action for both players and fans.

At the same time, BLAST has decided to replace the best-of-1 (BO1) Group Stage matches with best-of-3 (BO3) series across four GSL groups of four teams each.
GSL stands for Global StarCraft II League, and this format consists of a sequence of five matches to determine the two teams that advance and the two that are eliminated from each group.
Small Change in the Allocation of Invites
With the additional slots available, BLAST has introduced a permanent direct invite for the Americas. This is a welcome change considering South America's recent rise in performance, with PlayTime and LGD Gaming not only surviving but thriving despite losing their former organizations.
The new slot allocation is as follows:
- 11 direct invites
- 1 Americas direct invite
- 4 regional qualifier teams
- 2 from Europe
- 1 from Southeast Asia
- 1 from China
Seeding and Last Chance Qualifiers
Following the Group Stage, the tournament format will remain largely unchanged. The four group winners will compete in seeding matches to determine their placement in the Playoffs.

The two winners of the seeding matches will advance directly to the Upper Bracket Semifinals at the LAN Finals, while the two losing teams will move on to the Quarterfinals.
Meanwhile, the four second-place teams will compete in the Last Chance stage, with the two winners claiming the remaining Quarterfinal spots.
Malta Hosting Again, Key Dates, and Prize Pool
The announcement on BLAST's official blog also outlined the key dates leading up to BLAST Slam VIII:
- 4th August: Main event team invites sent
- 26th to 27th August: Open Qualifiers
- 29th to 30th August: Closed Qualifiers
- 14th September: Roster lock
- 29th September to 3rd October: Online Group Stage
- 8th to 11th October: LAN Finals at BLAST Arena Studios, Malta
BLAST will return to Malta, which previously hosted BLAST Slam VI. The country appears to present fewer visa-related issues than other European destinations, which may have been one of the reasons for bringing the event back.
BLAST Slam VIII will also introduce a new prize pool structure. Instead of the customary $1 million USD prize pool, the tournament will feature a combined $750,000 USD, split between prize money and team earnings.

Of that total, $550,000 USD will be awarded based on tournament results, while the remaining $200,000 USD will be distributed as team earnings. The new model aims to balance competitive rewards with guaranteed financial support for participating organizations.
Closing Thoughts
BLAST Slam VIII will be the second major tournament of the post-TI season and could become a turning point for many teams, either prompting roster changes before the new year or solidifying lineups formed during the traditional post-International roster shuffle.
The tournament won't begin until September, but in the meantime, we'll continue covering the biggest events of the year and every other meaningful development in the Dota 2 professional scene, so be sure to keep an eye on the news section of the Strafe website!
