The Overwatch Champions Series 2025 season (OWCS 2025) is expected to bring significant enhancements and expansions, building upon the successful reimagining of Overwatch Esports in 2024.

The upcoming season promises to deliver an even more captivating experience for fans and competitors alike, focusing on three key areas, as highlighted in their own blog post: creating a more rewarding and open competition, streamlining programs, and increasing accessibility for players and fans.

Additionally, a new OWCS Team Partner program will be introduced, further elevating the competitive landscape.

Enhanced OWCS 2025 format

The 2025 OWCS season will feature a comprehensive format spanning three stages across the globe, accompanied by three international Live Events. Kicking off in January with an Open Qualifier, the first stage will progress to a Regular Season featuring the top 8-12 teams, depending on the region.

This will culminate in a regional tournament that will determine which teams advance to the international Live Events. In an effort to enhance consistency and viewer experience, every Regular Season match will be broadcast, ensuring fans can follow all the action.

The program structure will be also be more uniform across North America, Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), and Asia, providing a cohesive viewing experience for global audiences.

Promotion and relegation system

The promotion and relegation system has become a cornerstone of many esports leagues, serving as a vital mechanism to maintain a dynamic and competitive environment. This system, borrowed from traditional sports, allows the best-performing teams from lower divisions to move up to higher divisions, while the worst-performing teams from higher divisions are relegated to lower ones. It has been successfully implemented in various esports titles, including StarCraft II, League of Legends, and Counter-Strike, though some leagues have moved away from this model in recent years.

This system provides a clear pathway for emerging talent to reach the highest levels of competition, fosters increased competition throughout the season, and ensures that a team's position is based on performance rather than financial backing or historical status. However, the system also presents challenges, particularly in terms of financial stability for teams and investors.

Team partner program

The heart of OWCS lies in its teams, and recognizing their importance, a pilot Partner Program was launched for the 2025 season to support up to nine teams across NA, EMEA, and Asia.

Partner Teams will benefit from a share of the proceeds from in-game team packs, providing them with a stable income source to build their programs. Organizations were invited to apply for participation, with applications having opened in late 2024 and closing on December 2.

While more information about the participating teams is still pending, the community already received some unexpected news - NRG/Shock, one of the most successful organizations in the Overwatch competitive scene - announced that they are not participants in the Partner Program for the 2025 season.

This information was not well received by the community, raising questions about the structure of the program and the future of professional Overwatch. NRG/Shock's absence leaves a huge gap and adds an element of doubt to the OWCS 2025 season. The full roster of Partner Teams and the implications of NRG/Shock's absence are expected to be revealed very soon.

Fan engagement and support

Fan engagement will be a key focus of the 2025 season, with the introduction of in-game bundles featuring Partner Team branding and colors on skins and other items.

These team packs will be available for purchase in the latter half of the 2025 OWCS Season, allowing fans to show support for their favorite teams both in and out of the game. This move not only enhances the viewer experience but also provides additional revenue streams for participating teams.

The OWCS organizers have expressed their gratitude for the community's feedback and enthusiasm, which has played a crucial role in shaping the evolution of the competition. As the 2025 Season approaches, more details will be revealed about the Partner Teams, support mechanisms, and the competition schedule.

Which Overwatch team you cheering for?

The upcoming 2025 OWCS Season undoubtedly represents a significant step forward for Overwatch Esports, building on the principles of open competition and year-round programming that were established in 2024.

With its focus on creating a more rewarding and accessible competitive environment, streamlined format, and increased support for teams, the 2025 season is poised to deliver an unparalleled esports experience for players, organizations, and fans around the world. As January approaches, the Overwatch community eagerly anticipates the start of what promises to be an exciting new chapter in competitive Overwatch.
