Bet you didn't see this coming, did ya? 9z came into Stage 3 of the IEM Cologne Major 2026 as heavy underdogs and left everyone with their jaws on the floor, beating Team Vitality in what is already being called one of the biggest upsets in recent Counter-Strike 2 history.

A Clash Nobody Expected to Go This Way

Coming into the second round of Stage 3, the gap on paper couldn't have been wider. Or so we thought. Vitality, ranked #1 in the world and chasing a legendary third Major title, were the heavy favorites. 9z were supposed to be a stepping stone for Vitality to reach the playoffs. The script was written, but the story had a very different ending.

The South American squad had already beaten PARIVISION 2-1 in their Stage 3 opening match, and before that swept TYLOO 2-0 to earn their first-ever Stage 3 appearance at a CS2 Major. This wasn't a team sleepwalking into the tournament. 9z came to Cologne with something to prove.

Where Was the Dominant Vitality?

Vitality has been the talk of the town for a good part of 2025 and now 2026, dominating almost every event they attended and entering the Major as the overwhelming favorites to make further history. But on this occasion, the French roster ran into a brick wall.

The veterans on the 9z side, captain Maximiliano "max" Gonzalez and Franco "dgt" Garcia, steadied the ship while the young trio brought relentless energy and firepower that Vitality simply couldn't contain across the series.

It's a bit of a reality check for apEX and ZywOo's squad. The defending Major champions, who entered Stage 3 seeded directly as one of the top eight teams in the world, dropped a match they were never supposed to lose at this stage of the competition.

The Kids Are Alright

This result is historic for the Argentinian CS2 scene. 9z now sit at 2-0 in Stage 3 and are just one win away from securing a Playoffs spot at the IEM Cologne Major 2026. That alone would be a massive achievement for an organization that arrived here after grinding through two stages of Swiss play. But beating the world's best team along the way? That's a historic moment for them.

The three rookie debutants deserve special mention. Meyern, who transitioned to an AWP role and has been quietly delivering since joining the squad, luchov, who posted a stellar performance at PGL Astana 2026, and HUASOPEEK, who has been a consistent presence since 2023, all showed that the Major stage doesn't faze them one bit.

This 9z squad is young, hungry, and suddenly very dangerous.
