VALORANT, Riot Games' tactical shooter, stands as one of the premier esports titles offering a blend of strategic gameplay and character-based prowess. Among its diverse roster of agents, Cypher stands out as the quintessential surveillance expert, a role that demands both strategic foresight and tactical precision.

This guide delves into the Moroccan information broker's toolkit, offering strategies, tips, and insights to help you elevate your game.

Cypher: Background and Lore

Hailing from Morocco, Amir El Amari grew up largely in poverty while witnessing the depletion of his city's resources to the Kingdom Corporation.

Positioning himself as a talented information broker, he was notable for his cautiousness, setting up multiple safehouses across different cities as well as never parting with his customary face-concealing mask.

Early on, he was recruited into the VALORANT Protocol as its 5th agent, codename: Cypher. Now he function as the team's information specialist, collecting information for mission planning and data on potential new recruits.

Cypher: Abilities Breakdown

Cypher's abilities are designed around information gathering, allowing players to monitor enemy movements, secure flanks, and protect key objectives without direct confrontation. This makes him one of the most dangerous agents when in the hands of a skilled player. Let's break down his kit:

Trapwire

Cypher equips two sensors and attaches them between two adjoining surfaces. The distance between is now linked by a sensor line which will trigger when an enemy crosses it, slowing and revealing them after a brief delay.

Trapwire is Cypher's bread and butter for his area control. It can be used to hold space, cover flank, guard a chokepoint, and set up kills for Cypher and his teammates. The sensor is destructible so placement is extremely key to get good value from it.

Cyber Cage

Cypher tosses a deployable puck in front of himself. He can activate it anytime during the round to create a cylindrical smoke cage that plays an audio cue when an enemy passes through it.

Cyber Cage is unique in 2 ways. It is one of only 3 smoke types (Astra and Viper being the others) that can be pre-placed and activated at a later time. This allows for the skill of pre-planning to shine where Cypher can show presence and impact from across the map.

The other is that Cyber Cage is singularly unique in that it notifies when an enemy enters and exits the cage. While the smoke is up, it creates a zone where enemies cannot pass through it silently, functioning as both area denial and information gathering.

Spycam

Spycam is Cypher's signature ability. He can equip and place it on a viable surface. Spycam can be re-activated anytime during the round once placed, offering a large view of the area around it. While in control of it, Cypher can fire a tracking dart from Spycam, permanently revealing the opponent until they remove the dart.

Spycam is one of the strongest passive information gathering tools in VALORANT for several reasons. It has no cooldown between activations. It is permanently available until broken, at which point it enters a cooldown.

It has no limitations on vision range unlike other abilities like Trailblazer, meaning its only caveat is to have a good LOS. And finally it can reveal an opponent, making it both a good distraction as well as an additional layer of delay while they remove the dart.

Neural Theft

Neural Theft has Cypher toss his hat onto an enemy corpse to reveal all remaining enemy positions twice after a delay.

When used at the opportune moments, it can be one of the most round-altering ultimates as it gives you and your team the entire picture of where the opponents are currently and allow your team to react ahead of time.

Playing Cypher Effectively

Unlike many other agents, Cypher has no inherent damage or reliable crowd control in his kit (except for the slow on his Trapwire). This means he is largely reliant on the individual piloting him to use the information Cypher can gather to its maximum.

Area Control

What truly distinguishes Cypher from other Sentinels such as Vyse or Killjoy, is that while he can completely lockdown a site, he isn't as naturally suited for it. Instead, he is set apart by his ability to hold multiple chokepoints with the use of Trapwire and Spycam.

Instead of hard denial, Cypher can function like a series of early warning systems for his team, holding down a large portion of the map while the rest of his team can freely battle for space elsewhere.

Dedicated Site Anchor

Of course, just like with any other Sentinel, Cypher is one of the best Agents at holding down a site when he dedicates most of his resources to it. His survivability is perhaps the best of all the Sentinels thanks to his dual Cyber Cages, and unlike other Sentinels, he has the option to either play on or off site with a variety of setups that are equally lethal.

Lurk

Hands down the best Sentinel to lurk with. His Trapwire and Spycam means that he can hold a portion of the map for his team on Attack and use Cyber Cage to slip through measures such as Trademark and Alarmbot with ease.

Trump Card

Neural Theft is one of the strongest ultimates in the game when capitalized on. The ability to know exactly where every opponent is on the map allows your team to seize space confidently and without fear.

There's also a sense of vulnerability from knowing the opponents know exactly where they are. It can kill stacks, late-round rotates/hits, and lurks, making it one of the best clutch ultimates in the game.

Cypher in Competitive Play

In the competitive landscape, Cypher's role as an information gatherer and area controller cannot be overstated. His ability to secure flanks and provide real-time data makes him a staple in professional play.

Teams looking to enhance their strategic depth will find Cypher's skill set indispensable. His presence on a team encourages a more calculated and information-driven playstyle.

Cypher's abilities can tilt the scales, providing his team with the intelligence needed to make strategic plays. In the hands of a skilled player, Cypher becomes a linchpin of the team's defense and an essential component of their offensive strategy.

Countering Cypher

Facing a skilled Cypher is a daunting task, but there are several steps a good team will need to do at the start of every round to negate his biggest strengths.

Cypher's power comes from information. While a Spycam on site is good for retakes and more passive/site-centric setups, good Cypher will often place aggressive Spycams to gain early information on opponent map movements.

Breaking it should become the early routine for your team as often as it makes sense to deny Cypher that early warning system. Trapwires are often placed at chokepoints to hold onto space where there are less Defenders. Make it a routine as well to destroy the traps when defaulting.

This forces the opponent team to reclear space or stretch out their own defensive lines to cover more entrypoints. Sova and Raze are two common counters to Cypher as they both as utility that can easily clear Trapwires.

Ultimately, you want to negate as much of Cypher's ability to gather and retain information/space for his team.

Conclusion

Cypher's unique blend of surveillance and intelligence gathering makes him a formidable agent in Valorant's tactical environment. Mastering his abilities requires practice, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of map dynamics.

By leveraging Cypher's toolkit effectively, players can control the battlefield, outmaneuver opponents, and secure victories for their team. His capabilities extend beyond mere gadgetry; they offer a way to influence the game's outcome through superior knowledge and positioning.

As you continue to refine your skills with Cypher, remember that the ultimate goal is not just to watch but to anticipate, adapt, and act decisively.
